The Clubhouse is a day program for brain injured persons where attendees are referred
to as “members” rather than “patients” or “clients” and the focus is on members’
strengths and abilities rather than their disabilities. Members are involved in
all aspects of running the Clubhouse in order to increase confidence, self esteem
and purpose in life after brain injury. Members and staff work together to determine
activities, and members set their own goals, with staff assistance as needed.
Members working together provide interdependence and social interaction thereby
recognizing each other’s value. Long term results demonstrate an increase in confidence,
self esteem, and independence.
The goal for members is to gain sufficient confidence and ability within the Clubhouse
to return to the work force. However, members who do not choose to or are unable
to obtain gainful employment will have continued work at the Clubhouse, remaining
a vital part of our (Clubhouse) community.
The Clubhouse further provides community supports including help with advocacy,
housing, transportation, benefits, medical and finances, as well as providing opportunities
for member education and social activities.
The Clubhouse consists of four main programs: Work Ordered Day, Employment, Education,
and Evening/Weekend Activities.
The work ordered day program is the heart of the Clubhouse. Through it members are
responsible for the daily operation of our Clubhouse where they work side by side
with staff and volunteers. Within the work ordered day, work units have been created
to help organize daily Clubhouse responsibilities, as well as provide important
opportunities for members to explore and develop new skills. Tasks within the work
units are ‘real work’ opportunities.

There are daily work unit meetings to identify and assign tasks. Each member decides
what work unit they will be involved with and what work they will do. The social
unity of the work ordered day usually draws most members into participating; thereby
creating an environment in which members collaborate and the development of social
and interpersonal skills is fostered.
