About Us

Community Clubhouse for Brain Injury is a program of Community Health Center

The Community Clubhouse for Brain Injury (formerly Ballinger TBI Clubhouse) is a community based day program that offers long-term support, in a non-medical setting, to brain injured individuals who want to regain their independence.

The Clubhouse is a program of the Community Health Center (a non-profit organization) and is housed at Summit Terrace Apartments in Akron, Ohio. Services are available to those individuals affected by brain injury in Summit, Stark, Portage, and Medina Counties.

In 1998, the National Institutes of Health recommended that all communities in the United States have brain injury clubhouses. As a result, a group of volunteers came together and developed a clubhouse in the Akron area, opening our current location in 2003.

The mission of the Community Clubhouse for Brain Injury is to strengthen individuals and families affected by brain injury by providing a community base of direct support to decrease isolation and increase personal and spiritual growth.

Our Vision

Empower people with brain injuries to enhance:

  • Self-esteem
  • Self-determination
  • Independence
  • Community involvement
  • Personal growth
  • Spiritual growth

What we do

The affects of brain injury to individuals and their families is devastating, many times causing deep feelings of isolation and depression. For this reason there is a great need to reach out to this population. The Community Clubhouse allows brain injured individuals to stay connected and give them a sense of hope and belonging.

Through work ordered days, we deliver structured activities into the individuals’ daily lives, thereby increasing their self-esteem and enhancing their sense of contribution to their family and community.

Community Clubhouse accomplishes its mission by developing programs through a collaborative partnership of people with brain injuries, family members, staff, local professionals, universities, research associates, the community, and the church. Programs such as:

  • Providing support groups for individuals and families affected by brain injury
  • Assisting persons with brain injury in their progress toward independence and fulfillment
  • Advocating community awareness and acceptance of those affected by brain injury
